About nine in 10 non-melanoma skin cancers and about six in 10 melanomas are thought to be caused by excessive sun exposure.

If you see any moles or lesions exhibiting the following, see your GP.

 

Asymmetry:
two halves different shape

Border:
edges irregular or jagged

Colour:
uneven/patchy; shades of black, white, grey, brown or pink; two or more colours = suspicious

Diameter:
for most melanomas, at least 6mm

Evolving:
changing in size, shape or colour

Funny:
if it looks odd, or you aren’t happy about it for any reason, known as an “Ugly Duckling”

What to Look Out For

Carry out the ABCDEF, looking out for new mole or lesions or changes in an existing mole or the “Ugly Duckling” test. The “Ugly Duckling” is a mole that stands out as significantly different from other moles Does it look different to your existing moles or lesions, The “Ugly Duckling” sign is a helpful tool for early detection but doesn’t guarantee a diagnosis of melanoma. It should be used in conjunction with other methods, such as the ABCDEF rule, and should be followed up with a dermatologist’s examination.

How can you help yourself?

  • Preparation – Clothing, hat, sunscreen, lip balm, water

  • ABCDEF be skin smart know your ABCDE λ Protection using sun screen with high protection SPF 30 or more

  • Exposure time and remember to top up

  • Regular skin checks, support and diagnosis

  • Seeking shade during peak sun hours

  • Ugly duckling using ABCDEF is it notably different
