Introducing SCARF+: A New Health Initiative for Rural Communities

Durham Dales Health Federation is pleased to announce the launch of a new year-long project: SCARF+ (Skin Cancer in Agriculture, Rural, and Farming +).

This innovative programme is designed to raise awareness of skin cancer among those working outdoors in agriculture and rural communities. Through targeted education, digital outreach, and on-site events, SCARF+ aims to highlight the risks of UV exposure and promote early detection of skin, bowel, lung, and other cancers that disproportionately affect people in rural areas.

Why SCARF+ Matters

Farmers and outdoor workers are especially vulnerable to skin cancer due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, often without suitable sun protection. SCARF+ will help bridge this gap by offering:

  • Tailored awareness campaigns

  • Practical UV protection advice

  • Cancer symptom education and self-check resources

  • Details on how to access and book cancer screenings

We’ll be delivering this programme at a range of community events, farmers’ markets, walk-in clinics, workplaces, and rural venues—meeting our communities where they are.
